How to access accommodations at Normandale
|
 |
After you have registered with the OSD program, follow these steps to access accommodations:
Alternative Testing
* After classes have started, get the blue "Testing Accommodation" form from the OSD in room L2744 (one form for each class).
* OSD staff will complete the forms for you and give you lavender testing authorization forms.
* Give the blue form and the lavender half sheets to each instructor.
* A few days before each test, come to L2744 to schedule an appointment for testing.
* Remind the instructor to bring the test to OSD.
* On the day of the test, come to OSD instead of class. Tests should be taken at the same time as the rest of the class.
Note Taking
Complete the pink "Note Taking Request" and return it to the OSD office (L2744). During the first two weeks of the semester, OSD staff will recruit volunteers in requested classes. Notes can be picked up at your mailbox outside of L2744. After completing 3 semesters at NCC, you will be responsible for recruiting your own volunteers. Talk to the OSD staff for suggestions if necessary.
Sign Language Interpreting
If you are deaf or hard of hearing and need interpreting services, you should meet with the OSD Director or the OSD Lead Interpreter to schedule interpreting before registering for classes. Currently enrolled OSD students may register for classes on the first day of registration. Late enrollment for classes may mean that interpreting services for that semester cannot be provided in a timely manner. If you withdraw from a course, let the OSD staff know immediately so that interpreting services can be cancelled.
If you need an interpreter for other school related activities, you also need to schedule with the OSD Director or the OSD Lead Interpreter. Requests for interpreters for other programs or activities offered at Normandale Community College need to be made at least 3 business days in advance. Forms to request interpreters can be obtained in the OSD office in L2744.
If you will be late or absent from class, you must call the OSD office before the class starts to cancel the interpreter (TTY 952-487-7032). The first time you are late or absent from class without calling the OSD office, you will receive a written reminder. If you are late or absent a second time without notifying the OSD office, you must meet with the OSD Director. If you are late or absent at third time without notifying the OSD office, your interpreting services could be withdrawn. After three absences, an alternative accommodation could be provided instead of an interpreter.
Taped Textbooks
* Get an Application for State Services in room L2744. Have the application signed by a physician and return the completed form to the OSD. A 4-track tape recorder will then be sent to you at no cost.
* Register early for classes.
* Find out the textbooks needed for your classes at the bookstore or at the bookstore's web site.
* Call Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFBD) at 1-800-221-4792 to see if the books are available on tape. Have the following information ready: Title, Author, Edition/copyright date, Publisher.
* You can also check availability of books at www.RFBD.org. Choose Catalog/Products.
* If a book is available, contact the OSD to be enrolled with RFBD. Then books can be ordered.
* If a book is not available, contact the OSD so that the book can be taped.
* For fiction requests, call Faribault at 1-800-722-0550.
Other Accommodations
Other accommodations including organization and time management assistance, course selection, and proofreading are determined on a case-by-case basis. Students can schedule an appointment with the OSD staff by signing up for an available time on the schedules posted on the door on L2744.

What if I have a concern about my accommodations or access to programs, services, or activities?
At Normandale, you are responsible for notifying the OSD if the accommodations that have been provided do not meet your needs. If you have attempted to resolve issues related to your accommodations but you feel that Normandale has failed to meet your needs, you may file a complaint. Complaints generally are about issues such as:
accommodations provided
timely implementation of accommodations
access to buildings
access to information
Complaints are treated seriously at Normandale and it has processes in place to investigate and help resolve them. Complaints should be filed in a timely manner and are usually, but do not need to be, submitted in written form.
The complaint process is as follows:
1. Talk to Debbie Tillman, the director of OSD, about your concern. Usually a complaint can be resolved at this informal level.
2. File a grievance using the procedure found in the Student Handbook. The college's ADA Compliance Officer will work with you to resolve your complaint.
3. File a complaint directly with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, by calling 1-800-421-3481, or the Minnesota Department of Human Rights by calling 651-296-5663 (Voice) or 651-296-1283 (TTY).
If you believe you have been discriminated against or harassed because of your disability, you may bring a complaint under the MnSCU Board Policy 1.B.1. Nondiscrimination in Employment and Educational Opportunity.
